Tamna is Jeju’s old name, meaning “island country.” The archaeological site of the early settlement indicates that the settlement dates back to the third century B.C. during the proto-Three Kingdoms Period. This site shows society during the period of Tamna formation (200 B.C. ~ 200 A.D.) Tamna is known to have been an active trading partner with Baekje, Goguryeo and Silla during the Three Kingdoms Period.(57B.C. ~ 668 A.D.)

Though Jeju Island had a distinct language and culture, people living in Korean peninsula s have considered it as a part of Korea. In the times when Koryo Dynasty was fighting against the Mongol Empire, history records that the trained military called Sambyeolcho in cooptation with Jeju residents fought hard against Mongol invaders.

Jeju Island is also called as an island plenty with three things; wind, stone, and women. Jeju women have been known for their independence and determination. Many of Jeju women have been Haehyoe, female divers who are not only housewives but also breadwinners who feed their family members by harvesting seaweed and other sea life from the ocean.

Now, Jeju is known as one of the most cultural diverse spots with the largest number of multicultural families and the greatest number of visitors.
